Activities at Lyrebird Dell, South Durras


Lyrebird Dell holiday cottage is only 15 minutes drive away from Batemans Bay, positioned in the perfect spot to enjoy a whole range of holiday activities, including birdwatching, bushwalking, canoeing, fishing, swimming, surfing and whalewatching.

 

Beaches

Venture down to the beach (only five minutes walk away) and enjoy kilometres of quiet sandy beaches, rockpools, headlands, daily views of dolphins swimming in the bay and regular sightings of whales on their annual migration (both in June and July, and then again in October and November). The beach at South Durras is fairly quiet at the southern end (ideal for kids), but good surfing at the northern end.

For the more adventurous, there are a whole chain of private beaches tucked away in the section of Murramarang National Park just south of Lyrebird Dell.

 


Sea kayaking and canoeing

Lyrebird Dell offer special accommodation and kayaking packages in conjunction with Bay & Beyond Sea Kayak Tours, where we include a morning or afternoon half-day tour of Durras Lake as part of your holiday tariff. Bay & Beyond are a highly accredited business offering a wide range of kayaking experiences, everything from sunset tours on Durras Lake to sea-kayaking in the open ocean. Cycling

You're welcome to borrow the two mountain bikes that come with Lyrebird Dell and explore the labyrinth of fantastic bike tracks around South Durras, Durras Lake and Murramarang National Park.



Shopping

Beautiful Bateman's Bay is only 15 minutes drive away, with lots of shopping, seafood, movies and holiday activities. For quirky gifts, interesting art and a variety of cafes, drive a little further south (about 10 minutes) to the pretty town of Mogo.

Fishing and boating

Make your way over to Durras Lake (2 km away) and discover one of the most pristine inland waterways in NSW. Go fishing for the plentiful flathead, garfish and blue swimmer crabs.


Bushwalking

South Durras is a bushwalker’s paradise. We supply you with maps, bushwalking books, a thermos and a water bottle - all you have do is the walking!

 

Wining and Dining

In South Durras, you can eat at Murramarang Resort, where the restaurant serves straightforward Aussie tucker, including an a-la-carte menu and a kids menu. Phone (02) 4478 6355. Alternatively, the Forest Gallery (on the left as you head back towards the highway) specialises in fresh, local produce and are usually open during the day for tea, coffee and light lunches (licensed or BYO). One of the highlights of South Coast eco-tourism is undoubtedly a tour to Montague Island Nature Reserve, with its resident seal colony and heritage buildings. Along the way you may encounter pods of migrating whales (Sept to Nov), vast schools of friendly dolphins, basking sunfish, manta rays, or acres of pelagic fish.

Narooma Charters also run whale watching tours from September through to November. Pods of up to 10 whales are not uncommon and often swim to the boat where they seem curious about the people watching them. Mogo Zoo is a privately owned Zoo situated 10km south of Batemans Bay in the picturesque and historic gold mining village of Mogo. The zoo is committed to the survival of endangered animals and provides world standard facilities for over 100 animals of more than 35 rare and exotic species. These botanic gardens are in a 42 hectare forest, just five kilometres south of Batemans Bay, and grow and display plants which occur naturally in the region. As well as display gardens, there are walking tracks, picnic areas, a visitor’s centre and a café. A lovely way to spend an afternoon.
